5 Foods That Can Trigger A Stroke

Few things feel more terrifying and random than a stroke, which can strike without warning. And fear of stroke -- when a blood vessel in or leading to the brain bursts or is blocked by a blood clod, starving brain cells of oxygen and nutrients -- is well founded. After all, stroke is the number-three killer in the U.S., affecting more than 700,000 people each year. Here are five foods that cause the damage that leads to stroke.

01. Crackers, chips, and store-bought pastries and baked goods

Muffins, doughnuts, chips, crackers, and many other baked goods are high in trans fats, which are hydrogenated oils popular with commercial bakeries because they stay solid at room temperature, so the products don't require refrigeration. Also listed on labels as "partially hydrogenated" or hydrogenated oils, trans fats are found in all kinds of snack foods, frozen foods, and baked goods, including salad dressings, microwave popcorn, stuffing mixes, frozen tater tots and French fries, cake mixes, and whipped toppings. They're also what makes margarine stay in a solid cube. The worst offenders are fried fast foods such as onion rings, French fries, and fried chicken
Why it's bad

For years scientists have known trans fats are dangerous artery-blockers, upping the concentrations of lipids and bad cholesterol in the blood and lowering good cholesterol. Now we can add stroke to the list of dangers. This year researchers at the University of North Carolina found that women who ate 7 grams of trans fat each day -- about the amount in two doughnuts or half a serving of French fries -- had 30 percent more strokes (the ischemic type, caused by blocked blood flow to the brain) than women who ate just 1 gram a day. Another recent study, also in women, found that trans fats promoted inflammation and higher levels of C-reactive protein, which have been linked to an increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.
What to do

Aim to limit trans fats to no more than 1 or 2 grams a day -- and preferably none. Avoid fast-food French fries and other fried menu items and study packaged food labels closely. Even better, bake your own cookies, cakes, and other snacks. When you can't, search out "health-food" alternative snacks, such as Terra brand potato chips and traditio
nal whole grain crackers such as those made by Finn, Wasa, AkMak, Ryvita, and Lavasch.

02. Smoked and processed meats

Whether your weakness is pastrami, sausage, hot dogs, bacon, or a smoked turkey sandwich, the word from the experts is: Watch out.Why it's badSmoked and processed meats are nasty contributors to stroke risk in two ways: The preserving processes leave them packed with sodium, but even worse are the preservatives used to keep processed meats from going bad. Sodium nitrate and nitrite have been shown by researchers to directly damage blood vessels, causing arteries to harden and narrow. And of course damaged, overly narrow blood vessels are exactly what you don't want if you fear stroke.

Many studies have linked processed meats to coronary artery disease (CAD); one meta-analysis in the journal Circulation calculated a 42-percent increase in coronary heart disease for those who eat one serving of processed meat a day. Stroke is not the only concern for salami fans; cancer journals have reported numerous studies in the past few years showing that consumption of cured and smoked meats is linked with increased risk of diabetes and higher incidences of numerous types of cancer, including leukemia.
What to do

If a smoked turkey or ham sandwich is your lunch of choice, try to vary your diet, switching to tuna, peanut butter, or other choices several days a week. Or cook turkey and chicken yourself and slice it thin for sandwiches. How to Tell if Someone Is Having a Stroke

Although replacing sugary drinks with diet soda seems like a smart solution for keeping weight down -- a heart-healthy goal -- it turns out diet soda is likely a major bad guy when it comes to stroke.
Why it's bad.

People who drink a diet soda a day may up their stroke risk by 48 percent. A Columbia University study presented at the American Stroke Association's 2011 International Stroke Conference followed 2,500 people ages 40 and older and found that daily diet soda drinkers had 60 percent more strokes, heart attacks, and coronary artery disease than those who didn't drink diet soda. Researchers don't know exactly how diet soda ups stroke risk -- and are following up with further studies -- but nutritionists are cautioning anyone concerned about stroke to cut out diet soda pop.
What to do Substitute more water for soda in your daily diet. It's the healthiest thirst-quencher by far, researchers say. If you don't like water, try lemonade, iced tea, or juice.

This winter, when the respected journal Stroke published a study showing that women who consumed a large portion of red meat each day had a 42-percent higher incidence of stroke, it got nutrition experts talking. The information that red meat, with its high saturated fat content, isn't healthy for those looking to prevent heart disease and stroke wasn't exactly news. But the percentage increase (almost 50 percent!) was both startling and solid; the researchers arrived at their finding after following 35,000 Swedish women for ten years.
Why it's bad

Researchers have long known that the saturated fat in red meat raises the risk of stroke and heart disease by gradually clogging arteries with a buildup of protein plaques. Now it turns out that hemoglobin, the ingredient that gives red meat its high iron content, may pose a specific danger when it comes to stroke. Researchers are investigating whether blood becomes thicker and more viscous as a result of the consumption of so-called heme iron, specifically upping the chance of strokes. What to doAim to substitute more poultry -- particularly white meat -- and fish, which are low in heme iron, for red meat. Also, choose the heart-healthiest sources of protein whenever you can, especially beans, legumes, nuts, tofu, and nonfat dairy.

05. Canned soup and prepared foods

Whether it's canned soup, canned spaghetti, or healthy-sounding frozen dinners, prepared foods and mixes rely on sodium to increase flavor and make processed foods taste fresher. Canned soup is cited by nutritionists as the worst offender; one can of canned chicken noodle soup contains more than 1,100 mg of sodium, while many other varieties, from clam chowder to simple tomato, have between 450 and 800 mg per serving. Compare that to the American Heart and Stroke Association's recommendation of less than1,500 mg of sodium daily and you'll see the problem. In fact, a nutritionist-led campaign, the National Salt Reduction Initiative, calls on food companies to reduce the salt content in canned soup and other products by 20 percent in the next two years.
Why it's bad

Salt, or sodium as it's called on food labels, directly affects stroke risk. In one recent study, people who consumed more than 4,000 mg of sodium daily had more than double the risk of stroke compared to those who ate 2,000 mg or less. Yet the Centers for Disease Control estimate that most Americans eat close to 3,500 mg of sodium per day. Studies show that sodium raises blood pressure, the primary causative factor for stroke. And be warned: Sodium wears many tricky disguises, which allow it to hide in all sorts of foods that we don't necessarily think of as salty. Some common, safe-sounding ingredients that really mean salt:

Baking soda
*

Baking powder
*

MSG (monosodium glutamate)
*

Disodium phosphate
*

Sodium alginate

What to do

Make your own homemade soups and entrees, then freeze individual serving-sized portions. Buy low-sodium varieties, but read labels carefully, since not all products marked "low sodium" live up to that promise.

Emmy Winners, Nominees Tweet Their Reactions

Last night’s Emmys were a mix of surprises and expected results as a few notable actors walked away with their first emmys and a couple of powerhouse shows maintained their place at the top.
The biggest surprise of the night might have been Friday Night Light‘s star Kyle Chandler winning the award for Outstanding Lead Actor for his role as Coach Taylor on the critically-acclaimed show. Peter Dinklage also grabbed an Emmy for his work on the HBO hit Game of Thrones.
The two shows that won the night’s big awards, Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Comedy Series have won the award for several years in a row. Both Mad Men and Modern Family winning the statues was no surprise to anyone. The Daily Show with Jon Stewart also won again for Variety, Musical or Comedy Series – making it 9 years in a row.
It was a huge night for Modern Family, as the show recorded wins for not only Outstanding Comedy Series, but for Supporting Actress (Julie Bowen), Supporting Actor (Ty Burrell), Directing (Michael Spiller) and Writing (Steve Levitan and Jeffrey Richman).

MICHAEL VICK SPITS UP BLOOD, GETS CONCUSSED, POSSIBLY OUT FOR THE SEASON

Michael Vick was spitting up blood and walking off the field the last time fantasy football owners saw him. And that's not good.
The Eagles electrifying quarterback, and very high draft pick in fantasy football leagues injured his neck in yesterday's loss to the Atlanta Falcons on a weird play where he was whipped around and knocked helmets with his own offensive lineman. Ont he play Vick bit his tongue and had to be helped off the field as he was seen spitting blood onto the turf.
Apparently the blood is only from his tongue and not from anything more serious. But he also suffered a concussion on the play, leaving his availability for next week's game against the New York Giants up in the air.
What's so ironic about this injury is that it didn't happen on one of Vick's trademark scrambles or one of his superhuman athletic moves. Instead of getting hit by a charging linebacker, he gets his by his own teammate.
And this is what we all knew would happen to Vick. He's a small guy who throws his body around more than any other NFL quarterback (or NFL running back for that matter) who's playing behind a questionable offensive line. This was bound to happen. And yet, fantasy football sites (except ours) had him ranked as either the first or second quarterback overall behind Aaron Rodgers. We had him ranked sixth for this very reason. If we're going to have to spend a late first or second round pick ona  guy, we'd rather go with the one that has a better chance of staying on the field and playing all 16 games, than the one who's missed games in nearly every season of his career (and that's not counting the ones he missed for dog fighting.)
Everyone knew Vick was going to get injured at some point this season. It was just a matter of when and for how long. More information will be available later today, but we've seen how concussions have affected players lok Austin Collie, Ben Roethlisberger, the NHL's Sidney Crosby, MLB's Justin Morneau and countless other athletes in recent years.
If we've learned anything from the scariness of concussions, it's that Vick could be out for the rest of the season. Hes almost assuredly out for their home opener, but time will tell how much longer he's out.
For all you fantasy players out there who owned Vick, you may want to scour the waiver wire this week for a replacement. It could be a very long season for you.

Kenny Stills Remembers Austin Box After Game-winning Touchdown

Oklahoma Sooners wide receiver Kenny Stills made a pair of -- and I don't say this lightly -- unbelievable catches to help his team beat the Florida St. Seminoles. One of those catches came in the fourth quarter, minutes after FSU had forced a late tie, and would prove to be the score that gave OU the victory.
But for plenty of Sooners fans, Stills' most memorable moment from Saturday night will be his touchdown celebration, when he held up a one and a two with his fingers in remembrance of fallen teammate Austin Box, who passed away over the summer and wore jersey No. 12.

Hawaiian Humane Society granted full custody of seized dogs

A judge has ruled more than 150 dogs and nearly 80 puppies currently in foster care should be forfeited to the Hawaiian Humane Society by owners of the breeding facility they were rescued from.
The accused puppy mill owners have the chance to post a bond by Thursday morning which would retain their rights as owners through the end of a separate criminal case. Their attorney says that bond could reach the millions of dollars.
The Hawaiian Humane Society petitioned for forfeiture of all of the living dogs rescued in February from Bradley International's breeding site in Waimanalo. They also asked for custody of 79 puppies subsequently born to the already pregnant mothers.
"There is probable cause to conclude that each and every one of the dogs impounded in feb was in fact subjected to violation(s)," said Judge Glenn Kim. "The puppies necessarily follow their mothers."
The ruling elicited cheers and tears in the courtroom where Humane Society workers, volunteers and foster families looked on.
"She's really gotten a lot better and she's just a love. I am so very happy that I get to keep her," said foster caregiver Julia Ward.
"Both the dog mother and the puppies are not having to go back to a horrible breeding situation," said foster caregiver Sheree Revilla.
But the facility owner still has a chance to retain ownership if they post a sizeable bond at a Thursday morning hearing.
"We're ecstatic, and we really hope at this point bradley international understands and heard what the judge said and we ask that they do not post a bond for their care and let us finally find homes for these animals," said Keoni Vaughn of the Hawaiian Humane Society.
The bond would have to cover the cost of care from the beginning of the seizure through the eventual end of a still pending criminal case
"The bond amount keeps going up the longer the trial is postponed, the bond amount could be in the millions of dollars by the time the case actually goes to trial," said Bradley International attorney Jason Burks.
The forfeiture related to Bradley International as a corporation. The defense attorney says individual owners could try to sue to intervene.
"Our concern is that we can free these animals from a life of prison," Vaughn says. "I hope this sends a message to all large-scale breeding operations where profit is more important than the animal's welfare."
Foster caregivers have the opportunity for permanent adoption pending the outcome of the bond hearing.

The 7 Worst Natural Disasters Of The Last Decade

7. Hurricane Katrina

Date: August 2005
Location: Louisiana, Mississippi, as well as other areas of the Southern United States

Fatalities: 1,300
Total losses/insured losses: $125 billion/$62.2 billion

Indelible media footage of people waiting to be rescued from rooftops as turbulent water continued to rise around them made Hurricane Katrina one of the most unforgettable natural disasters in recent American history. Today, an ongoing effort to rebuild New Orleans keeps Hurricane Katrina at the forefront of American minds.

The hurricane itself claimed 1,300 lives, but property damage was far more substantial. Total economic losses are calculated at $125 billion, and insured losses amount to $62.2 billion, according to the Insurance Information Institute (III). Although preliminary estimates from the March 11, 2011 earthquake in Japan are already higher, Hurricane Katrina currently ranks as the 21st Century’s most expensive natural catastrophe to date.

6. 2003 European Heat Wave
Date: June-August of 2003
Location: France, Italy, Germany and throughout Europe
Fatalities: 70,000
Total losses/insured losses: $13.8 billion/$20 million

While the effects of hurricanes, tornadoes and many other natural disasters can be seen and measured immediately, other catastrophes take an entire season before death tolls and losses are clear. Such was the case in the summer of 2003 when a heat wave killed more than 70,000 people throughout Europe; most deaths were concentrated in the elderly population.

The idea that high temperatures could wreck deadly havoc may seem somewhat strange, but air-conditioning is a rarity throughout much of Europe, and especially in France. In these normally cooler climates, abnormally hot temperatures and the government’s inability to locate those most vulnerable to hyperthermia combined to cause many of the heat-related deaths.

5. 2005 Kashmir earthquake

Date: October 2005
Location: Pakistan, India and Afghanistan
Fatalities: 88,000
Total losses/insured losses: $5.2 billion/$5 million

Measured at magnitude 7.6, the 2005 Kashmir earthquake devastated Pakistan, as well as parts of India and Afghanistan. The fatalities attributed to this natural disaster numbered 88,000 and the total losses amounted to $5.2 billion, according to the III. In addition, the U.S. Geological Survey estimated that more than 69,000 people were injured and at least 32,000 buildings collapsed during this natural catastrophe.

4. Cyclone Nargis

\
Date: May 2008
Location: Myanmar (Burma), Bay of Bengal
Fatalities: 140,000
Total losses/insured losses: $4 billion/not applicable

The Cyclone Nargis came out of the North Indian Ocean during the storm season of 2008 with winds as strong as 121 miles per hour. When the storm hit landfall, it killed 140,000 people. In the process, about $4 billion worth of damage was sustained. To make matters worse, international relief efforts were rebuffed by the country’s military junta immediately after the storm hit Myanmar. That left many survivors of the storm without necessary supplies.

3. 2008 Sichuan earthquake

Date: May 2008
Location: Sichuan Province, China
Fatalities: 84,000
Total losses/insured losses: $85 billion/$300 million

In less than 2 minutes the 7.9 magnitude Sichuan earthquake affected 45.5 million people in China, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). In this earthquake’s aftermath, 15 million people were evacuated from their homes, more than 5 million were left homeless and over 84,000 were killed. In fact, the number of deaths from this terrifying temblor could be higher, as 18,000 people remain missing to this day.

2. Indian Ocean Tsunami of 2004

Date: December 2004
Location: Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand, India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Maldives and Malaysia

Fatalities: 220,000
Total losses/insured losses: $10 billion/$1 billion

Few disasters have had the same level of international impact as the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004. On Dec. 26, 2004, an undersea earthquake originating in Sumatra, Indonesia caused a catastrophic tsunami that would claim the lives of more than 220,000 people. The earthquake and resulting tsunami affected Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, Maldives, Indonesia and many other countries in Asia and northern Africa. The deadly megathrust earthquake was estimated at magnitude 9.0.

1. 2010 Haiti Earthquake

Date: January 2010

Location: Haiti
Fatalities: 222,570
Total losses/insured losses: $8 billion/$200 million

Twelve days into 2010, the 7.0 magnitude Haiti earthquake killed close to 222,570 people and left an additional 3 million Haitians affected in some way. While the intensity of the earthquake was not as pronounced as the March 11, 2011 earthquake in Japan, Haiti’s shoddy construction standards and the absence of building codes made the catastrophe particularly devastating. Following the earthquake, survivors slept on the streets either out of necessity or for fear that standing structures were unstable. Haiti is still in recovery in the aftermath of this quake.
